Starting your own radio station is no easy task, there so much for you to consider when you first begin. Setting up your licensing, equipment, streaming locations, sponsors and maybe even volunteers can be time consuming, so much in fact that it’s easy to forget that you need to find a way to pull in the listeners. When you begin a project like this it really is easy to forget things that later seem huge so don’t beat yourself up about it. Maybe you didn’t forget at all (in that case I’d say find out what you have forgotten, there is bound to be something!) and that’s great, still it always helps to know how to bring in new listeners. Here are a few tips for you just to get you started.
Put Your Station Out There
It’s all well and good telling people to listen to your radio station but unless they know just where they can do so it won’t matter how many people you’ve told; you just won’t get those listeners. There are a few ways in which you can make it really easy for prospective audience members to discover you, firstly you can make sure that you have registered your site through as many online directories as you can, there are plenty of free directories that you can do this on so you need not worry about forking out for this service. If you have a website for your station or a social media page (it’s the 21st century so I’m guessing you have both) then include a radio player on there so people can access it easily, also try to include any other news as to where they might be access it (itunes, amazon alexa, TuneIn, etc.). Finally, if you really want to make life easy for your listeners provide an app that they can listen to your station through, that way they can load it up on their smartphones or tablets. If you run an internet radio station, then this means they can easily listen to it in their cars too.
Go Live with Guests
If you produce live shows with special guests on people are more likely to be interested in your content, not only are you creating up to date and interesting content, but you’ll be more likely to bring new listeners in to your show. By having different guests on you’ll find that their fans or friends and family will tune in and maybe they’ll like what they hear?
Get Active on Social Media
Having a heavy presence on social media will make people more aware of your existence. In this day and age people are glued to their phones, make sure they see you often. If you get enough likes on Facebook (2000 to be precise) you’ll be able integrate that all important radio player too so its super beneficial to get to work here straight away.
